iran, you're for it.

i'm thinking that the circumstance of the contemporary US of A is similar to what i remember from studying classical athens, in terms of hegemony and absolute power.
if i recall, prior to the peloponnesian war athens pretty much held the rest of the aegan to ransom with its superior fleet and massive treasury (which was largely maintained by levies against smaller islands). the razing of milos is a good example of what the democratic athenians were capable of when pissed of by non-cooperation.
what i wonder though is whether an out of control and 'rogue' US would have to be pulled into line by its 'allies'? if the US decides to invade too many countries, would the rest of the world stand by (potentially to watch the americans bankrupt themselves), or would they try to intervene somehow?
